Happy 54th Birthday Godzilla!!
On this date back in 1954, Godzilla made his on-screen debut in Japanese theaters. Little did they know he would become an icon of the Japanese culture and launch a whole series of giant monster movies called kaiju.
Like most of the monsters of the day, Godzilla was a result of atomic radiation. The film was actually the 8th most attended film that year in Japan so it didn’t hit the ground running. The movie made its way over to the United States the following year, but was only released in Japanese catering movie theaters. It wasn’t until the 1960s when Rialto Pictures took over distribution did the film receive mass release in the U.S.
