Top Movie Monsters of All Time
We’ve finally made it to Halloween, so to finish off the “best of”s for the week I figured we should end it with a list of the Top 20 Movie Monsters of All Time. As you will see on the list, the term “monster” is slightly loosened to include human characters as well that were the focus of a horror film. In their own way they were “monsters” in the sense of evil. Enjoy and happy halloween!!!
20. Damien – Ok this little kid was freaky. Really freaky. Hell, little kids in movies are scary anyway and this one tops the list.
19. Pinhead – The primary villain in Hellraiser looks like he stepped in front of a nail gun gone crossfire. The original of this series is the best, but Pinhead brings creepiness thru them all.
18. Chucky – This wise-cracking, foul-mouthed, little piece of plastic is a cult favorite. How could any list of horror film monsters not include this little sumbitch.
17. Pennywise (It) – Scary clown. Sweet merciful crap…seriously scary clown. Barnum and Bailey’s on a serious acid trip. Other movie scary clown worth mentioning is the one from Poltergeist.
16. Alien – The most terrifying mamma in horror films. The special effect creators behind this multi-film alien monster were brilliant. The little mouth within the mouth and the drooling is an onscreen icon of horror and science fiction fans alike.
15. Norman Bates – Good ol momma’s boy himself. Sure playing this role probably ruined his film career to do anything else, but so what. Psycho is widely considered one of the best horror/suspense films in history and certainly Hitchcock’s best.
14. King Kong – What’s more fun that a monkey….a really big one.
13. Mummy – doesn’t seem very scary….dude dressed in a bunch of bandage wraps…but it is. The original and the Hammer films versions were terrific. The modern day Brendan Frasier ones are hokey and fun too.
12. Leatherface – Being that this one is loosely based on a true story adds to the creepiness of this one. The modern day remakes are also very well done.
11. Godzilla – A billion Asians can’t be wrong. Seriously. The most famous lizard in history. Total riot. These are some really great old films. He was like the original Power Ranger.
10. Freddy Krueger – 1…2…Freddy’s coming for you. That sound and the sound of knives sceaching on pipes haunted the dreams of many over the years. Freddy has, by far, the coolest weapon of all the villains…the knife glove.
9. Frankenstein – I guess by just sayin Frankenstein I could be referring to either the Doctor…or the monster. The monster is who most think of when you say the name, but the real monster was the creator…maybe not in physical appearance like his creation though.
8. Hannibal Lecter – Anthony Hopkins was brilliant in his portrayal of this creepy cannibal. You can’t even say the word Clarice without hearing his voice. His best actor Oscar was well deserved.
7. Jack Torrence (The Shining) – Here’s Johnny!!! One of Jack Nicholson’s best roles. This film ranks among many as one of the scariest films ever and Nicholson brings this awesome Stephen King character to life.
6. Jason Vorhees – Of course the good ol Crystal Lake summer camp slasher makes the top ten. The Friday the 13th series is quite a long one sending Jason from the woods, to NYC, and even up into space. If you are a young couple of co-eds and are at summer camp…don’t have sex…cause…well you will die. Jason will see to that.
5. Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) – Linda Blair probably ruined her career with this role as she never really ended up doing anything else noteworthy. Who cares cause she was utterly fantastic in this film. Most folks will never eat split pea soup after watching this film. Uber freaky film considered by most critics to be the scariest in history.
4. Michael Myers – The master of Halloween slashery is right here with Michael Myers. The mask alone is some seriously creepy stuff. He doesn’t talk. He doesn’t scream. He just kills. And he does it well. Awesome series of slasher films. Set the standard.
3. Wolf Man – Lon Cheney scared early 20th century audiences out of their pants. Sure by today’s standards it really isn’t all that scary, but taken in the right context of the time he really was.
2. Dracula – I would say this is a tie between two portrayals. The first would be the original man himself Bela Lugosi. Much like the Wolf Man in #3, this was really some scary stuff back in the 1930s. The other portrayal of this Bram Stoker character would be by Gary Oldman in the film of the same name. Truly a magnificant and perfect performance of this classic bloodsucker.
1. Jaws – No film in history has put so much fear into the masses as this fake great white shark did. After this film came out, beaches weren’t visited as often and shark hunting became widely popularized as being necessary to protect people (which has ultimately led to the almost extinction of several species). People will always think twice before getting in the water after seeing this film and the music is probably one of the most recognizable from any score. A remarkable and timeless film, this is Spielberg’s finest work.
Got an opinion on others that were left out or that my list is totally wrong (or right)?
Drop in a comment and let’s discuss.
