Top Movie Monsters of All Time

We’ve finally made it to Halloween, so to finish off the “best of”s for the week I figured we should end it with a list of the Top 20 Movie Monsters of All Time.  As you will see on the list, the term “monster” is slightly loosened to include human characters as well that were the focus of a horror film.  In their own way they were “monsters” in the sense of evil.  Enjoy and happy halloween!!!

20. Damien – Ok this little kid was freaky.  Really freaky.  Hell, little kids in movies are scary anyway and this one tops the list.

19. Pinhead – The primary villain in Hellraiser looks like he stepped in front of a nail gun gone crossfire.  The original of this series is the best, but Pinhead brings creepiness thru them all.

18. Chucky – This wise-cracking, foul-mouthed, little piece of plastic is a cult favorite.  How could any list of horror film monsters not include this little sumbitch.

17. Pennywise (It) – Scary clown.  Sweet merciful crap…seriously scary clown.  Barnum and Bailey’s on a serious acid trip.  Other movie scary clown worth mentioning is the one from Poltergeist.

16. Alien – The most terrifying mamma in horror films.  The special effect creators behind this multi-film alien monster were brilliant.  The little mouth within the mouth and the drooling is an onscreen icon of horror and science fiction fans alike.

15. Norman Bates – Good ol momma’s boy himself.  Sure playing this role probably ruined his film career to do anything else, but so what.  Psycho is widely considered one of the best horror/suspense films in history and certainly Hitchcock’s best.

14. King Kong – What’s more fun that a monkey….a really big one.

13. Mummy – doesn’t seem very scary….dude dressed in a bunch of bandage wraps…but it is.  The original and the Hammer films versions were terrific.  The modern day Brendan Frasier ones are hokey and fun too.

12. Leatherface – Being that this one is loosely based on a true story adds to the creepiness of this one.  The modern day remakes are also very well done.

11. Godzilla – A billion Asians can’t be wrong.  Seriously.  The most famous lizard in history.  Total riot.  These are some really great old films.  He was like the original Power Ranger.

10. Freddy Krueger – 1…2…Freddy’s coming for you.  That sound and the sound of knives sceaching on pipes haunted the dreams of many over the years.  Freddy has, by far, the coolest weapon of all the villains…the knife glove.

9. Frankenstein – I guess by just sayin Frankenstein I could be referring to either the Doctor…or the monster.  The monster is who most think of when you say the name, but the real monster was the creator…maybe not in physical appearance like his creation though.

8. Hannibal Lecter – Anthony Hopkins was brilliant in his portrayal of this creepy cannibal.  You can’t even say the word Clarice without hearing his voice.  His best actor Oscar was well deserved.

7. Jack Torrence (The Shining) – Here’s Johnny!!! One of Jack Nicholson’s best roles.  This film ranks among many as one of the scariest films ever and Nicholson brings this awesome Stephen King character to life.

6. Jason Vorhees – Of course the good ol Crystal Lake summer camp slasher makes the top ten.  The Friday the 13th series is quite a long one sending Jason from the woods, to NYC, and even up into space.  If you are a young couple of co-eds and are at summer camp…don’t have sex…cause…well you will die.  Jason will see to that.

5. Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist) – Linda Blair probably ruined her career with this role as she never really ended up doing anything else noteworthy.  Who cares cause she was utterly fantastic in this film.  Most folks will never eat split pea soup after watching this film.  Uber freaky film considered by most critics to be the scariest in history.

4. Michael Myers – The master of Halloween slashery is right here with Michael Myers.  The mask alone is some seriously creepy stuff.  He doesn’t talk.  He doesn’t scream.  He just kills.  And he does it well.  Awesome series of slasher films.  Set the standard.

3. Wolf Man – Lon Cheney scared early 20th century audiences out of their pants.  Sure by today’s standards it really isn’t all that scary, but taken in the right context of the time he really was.

2. Dracula – I would say this is a tie between two portrayals.  The first would be the original man himself Bela Lugosi.  Much like the Wolf Man in #3, this was really some scary stuff back in the 1930s.  The other portrayal of this Bram Stoker character would be by Gary Oldman in the film of the same name.  Truly a magnificant and perfect performance of this classic bloodsucker.

1. Jaws – No film in history has put so much fear into the masses as this fake great white shark did.  After this film came out, beaches weren’t visited as often and shark hunting became widely popularized as being necessary to protect people (which has ultimately led to the almost extinction of several species).  People will always think twice before getting in the water after seeing this film and the music is probably one of the most recognizable from any score.  A remarkable and timeless film, this is Spielberg’s finest work.

Got an opinion on others that were left out or that my list is totally wrong (or right)?

Drop in a comment and let’s discuss.

Hop in the car with Nick as he cruises around the streets of Los Angeles California.

The camera is operational weekdays from 10am to 5:30pm PST.

Not really sure what Nick is looking for when driving around.  Maybe he is a stalker…or serial killer…who knows really.  At any rate at least you get to check out the scenery without having to actually meet Nick and get in his car yourself…cause that would be creepy.

Top 10 Werewolf Movies

2008 October 30
by corndogger
GTFO...WTFMediocre at BestYea...I Liked ItTop Notch EntertainmentMaximum Awesomeness (No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

The Halloween movie fun keeps on rolling.  This time let’s throw werewolves into the mix.  Sure they don’t get the sexy mystique of vampires nor do they get the awesome fun of zombies, but they do deserve some discussion as they are important to the overall horror history and genre.

10.  Teen Wolf - Who knew a werewolf could play high school basketball?  Sit back and enjoy the 80s awesomeness of this Michael J. Fox classic as he shows that sometimes being a little hairy can do wonders for your high school popularity.  Toss in all the typical high school stereotypes and traditional 80s film flair with a werewolf…instant success.  Makes me wanna go out and van surf just thinking about it.

 9.  Underworld – This film actually is the only one to make more than one of the top 10 lists because of the interweaved storyline between the werewolves (lycans) and the vampires (death dealers).  Interesting twist to the historical tie between them, great effects, and cool gothic backdrop architecture are worth the admission.  Beckinsale kicking ass in leather is reason enough alone to watch it.  If you like the storyline, the sequel picks right up where the first one finishes.

 8. Silver Bullet – Corey Haims shows just how capable the handicapable are in this Stephen King novella originally called The Cycle of the Werewolf brought to the screen.  Gary Busey co-starring in this film earns it a top ten spot right away, but Haim using a Roman Candle as a weapon moves it up to the 8 spot.  If I ever end up in a wheelchair…I know exactly the kind I would want.

 7. Wolfen - Albert Finney, Gregory Hines, and Edward James Olmos star in this film which was one of three werewolf movies released in 1981 (the other two took the #1 and #2 slots here).  Pace is a little slow, but the NY underground setting provides excellent atmosphere for the film.  Touches more on the Native American myths and legends tied in with environmentalism than some others in the genre.

 6. Wolf – An all star line-up were gathered for this one (Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and James Spader).  Jack Nicholson stars in the role everyone had been waiting for from him.  The best thing about this film is it adds a multi-dimensional aspect to the wolf which really hadn’t been explored as much before.  Transformation scenes in this one are also very well done which in general is one of the overall worst parts of werewolf films as they are generally not done well.

 5. Ginger Snaps – Don’t let the chick teen flick name or dvd cover throw you off.  Certainly, one of the lower budget films in the list, but they do a surprisingly good job with a clever script and creative set up.  Having a wolf be attracted to a girl’s period…yea I would say that is original.  This film provides the right amount of gore and good to see a modern movie use animatronics over CGI.  The film surprised a lot of horror critics and fans alike, so if you haven’t seen it then you should make it a point to see.

 4. Dog Soldiers – The only British entry to make the top 10, this film went straight to DVD in the US should make your must see wolf list as it easily could have slid under your radar.  The script has some surprisingly funny lines (most notably the “I hope I give you the shits” one) as well as being pretty violent.  Again, no CGI is a bonus here.  If you want a good beer and pizza movie then this is it.

 3. The Wolf Man (1941) – Kickin’ it old school with our number 3 slot.  Lou Chaney is the original and considered “the” werewolf of all cinema.  Sure it’s black and white and is missing all of the violent scenes from more modern day entries, but there is just something about some of these older classics that make them so enjoyable to watch.  Take a drive thru werewolf film history and check this film out.

 2. The Howling – Another of the 1981 multi-studio trifecta releasing of werewolf films.  This film certainly made folks afraid of the woods.  This one focuses around a pack or colony of werewolves who operate a retreat facility.  Lots of good gore and the best on screen transformation sequences released (until the next film came out later that same year).  Bonus with it is some early 80s full frontal nakedness.  The ending of the film was awesome which will make you laugh and was well done.  This film has spawned 6 sequels which are generally ripped apart and not well received.

 1. An American Werewolf in London - I think it is probably pretty safe to say that no one out there can argue about this film being given the grand prize ribbon for wolf films.  This is the standard by which all films before and after 1981 are compared to and is still considered the best and most revolutionary transformation scene on film.  Ironically enough with this scary horror film comes some perfectly timed comedic moments centered primarily around the ghost of his dead friend.  This film used to terrify me as a young Corndogger and as I got older the more I really appreciated it not only as a stand-alone werewolf film, but as a film that took American horror films to a new standard.
Honorable Mentions – If you’ve seen the usuals and want to venture off the beaten path, you should check out these as well.

  • Bad Moon – Bad acting, bad cgi, but interestingly told partly thru a dog’s point of view.
  • The Company of Wolves – Not your childhood tale of Little Red Riding Hood.
  • Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein – Sure it’s hokey, but it is fun.  The old comedy duo face all the monster classics from Dracula to the Wolfman.
  • Brotherhood of the Wolf – More action than horror, but can you really go wrong with a kung fu native american kicking ass in Europe?  Interesting take on the myth.

Got an opinion on others that were left out or that my list is totally wrong (or right)?

Pier 39 in San Francisco is one of the most popular spots for tourists that come to the city.

From this vantage point, folks can see Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the Bay Bridge.

Besides the 110 shops and 12 restaurants, one of the biggest reasons people visit here is to watch the Sea Lions that have taken up residency there.
Throughout the year they average around 300 sea lions, but in the winter months can reach as many as 900 to 1000.
No need to get on a plane my friends.  Just click the image and enjoy the sea lion awesomeness.
